Bald Eagles at Wolf Lodge Bay 2026: When to Go, Where to Watch, and Eagle Cruises

Updated 2026-11-08. By your local hosts at Village Collective.
Every winter, bald eagles gather on Lake Coeur d'Alene to feed on spawning kokanee salmon, and Wolf Lodge Bay, about 11 miles east of downtown, is the place to see them. The Bureau of Land Management has counted them there since 1974.
In recent winters the biggest counts have come between late November and late December, with a record 409 eagles on December 20, 2023. Plan your trip for Thanksgiving week through mid-December for the best odds, bring binoculars, and check the BLM's latest weekly count before you drive out.
When to see the eagles
The eagles winter here from November through February, but the numbers rise and fall with the kokanee run. Here is the highest weekly count in each of the last seven winters, from the BLM:
| Winter | Peak count | Date |
|---|---|---|
| 2025-26 | 294 eagles | November 26, 2025 |
| 2024-25 | 284 eagles | December 12, 2024 |
| 2023-24 | 409 eagles (record) | December 20, 2023 |
| 2022-23 | 227 eagles | December 28, 2022 |
| 2021-22 | 112 eagles | December 14, 2021 |
| 2020-21 | 82 eagles | November 25, 2020 |
| 2019-20 | 259 eagles | December 2, 2019 |
Counts can drop fast once the fish are gone. Last winter the BLM counted 294 eagles on November 26 and just 20 by December 19, so don't save this for after Christmas.
Where to watch
The BLM suggests three viewing areas around Wolf Lodge Bay: Higgens Point, the Mineral Ridge Boat Ramp, and the Mineral Ridge Trailhead. To reach the Mineral Ridge side, take I-90 east from Coeur d'Alene for eight miles to Wolf Lodge Bay (Exit 22), then Highway 97 south for three miles. Higgens Point sits at the east end of the Centennial Trail.
These picks from our local guide put you right on the bay:
- Bald eagle watching at Higgens Point (attractions, Coeur d'Alene): The classic eagle spot at the end of the Centennial Trail. Bring binoculars.
- Mineral Ridge Scenic Area - Hiking and sightseeing (Hiking Trails, Coeur d'Alene): A 3.3-mile loop with interpretive signs, climbing to an overlook above Beauty Bay.
- Blue Creek Bay Recreation Site and Trail (Hiking Trails, Coeur d'Alene): A quiet forested walk along Blue Creek with views over Wolf Lodge Bay.

See them from the water: eagle watching cruises
Lake Coeur d'Alene Cruises runs two-hour eagle watching cruises from downtown out to Wolf Lodge Bay on select dates from November 20, 2026 through January 3, 2027. Cruises leave at noon, with boarding at 11:30 AM at the Boardwalk Marina, and warm drinks are for sale on board.
Tickets are $29 for adults, $27.50 for seniors 55 and up, $23 for ages 6 to 17, and free for kids 5 and under.

Viewing tips
- Bring binoculars. The BLM calls them essential, because the best views are from a distance.
- Don't approach the eagles on foot, and stay as far from them as you can.
- If birds are close by, stay in your vehicle and watch from there.
- Park off the main road. I-90 and Highway 97 are busy, and it's illegal to stop in a traffic lane, so never stop on the road or look for eagles while driving.
- Dress for standing still in the cold: a warm coat, hat, gloves and boots. Mornings by the water are chilly.

Make a winter weekend of it
- The eagles overlap with the holiday lights. The Journey to the North Pole cruises run November 26, 2026 through January 3, 2027, and our Christmas lights guide has the details.
- Skate downtown at CDA On Ice in McEuen Park, open through January 18, 2027.
- Wolf Lodge Bay is on the way to Silver Mountain, so you can watch eagles in the morning and ski, tube or ride the gondola in the afternoon. Our ski guide covers all four mountains nearby.
