Silver Mountain: the closest, 35 miles east

Silver Mountain is in Kellogg, just off I-90, about 35 miles east of Coeur d'Alene. The resort points out there are no winding mountain roads to reach it: the road from the freeway is flat and plowed in winter. Online lift tickets for 2026-27 are $64 for adults midweek and $76 on weekends, and kids 6 and under ski free.

  • Snow tubing: two-hour sessions on a 640-foot hill with a moving carpet back to the top, $30.95 for adults and $27.95 for ages 4 to 17 (a few dollars more on holidays). The ticket includes the gondola ride up and your tube. Reservations are required online, and sessions sell out.
  • Silver Rapids, the indoor waterpark at the base, is mainly for the resort's lodging guests, but it sells a limited number of day tickets online. There are no walk-up tickets, and none are sold for Saturdays or holidays.
  • Not skiing? A scenic gondola ride is $22.97 for adults and free for kids 6 and under.

Lookout Pass: on the Montana line, 56 miles east

Lookout Pass sits at I-90 Exit 0 on the Idaho and Montana border, and the parking lot is about 200 yards from the off-ramp. It opened in the winter of 1935-36, making it the oldest ski area in Idaho, and its Eagle Peak expansion brought it to 1,023 skiable acres. The resort reports more than 450 inches of snow a year.

Reserved 2026-27 tickets are $63 for adults midweek and $75 on weekends, a few dollars less than the window. Kids 6 and under ski free when an adult buys a ticket that day, skiers 80 and up ski free, and a three-ticket pack is $179.

Across the state line: Mt. Spokane and 49° North

Mt. Spokane is a nonprofit ski area northeast of Spokane, about an hour and 20 minutes from Coeur d'Alene, with more than 1,700 acres, six lifts and 53 runs. It is aiming to open December 5, 2026. Adult tickets are $68 on weekdays and $92 on weekends and holidays, $5 less online. Night skiing runs Wednesday through Saturday from 3 to 9 PM, December 16 through March 14 (except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day), for $45, and kids 6 and under ski free.

49° North is 10 miles outside Chewelah, Washington, about two hours from Coeur d'Alene, with 2,325 acres across two peaks, an average of 301 inches of snow, and about 10 miles of Nordic trails. Its prices drop the further ahead you buy: from $49 for adults midweek and $72 on weekends at the lowest advance rate, and higher within two days of your visit.

Ways to save on lift tickets

  • Buy online ahead at every mountain. Window prices are higher, and 49° North saves its best prices for tickets bought at least two days out.
  • Skip the holiday periods if you can. Silver Mountain and Lookout Pass charge holiday rates December 19 through January 3, January 16 to 18, and February 13 to 15.
  • Kids 6 and under ski free at Silver Mountain, and at Lookout Pass when an adult buys a ticket that day. At Schweitzer, kids under 4 ski free.
  • Lookout Pass lets skiers 80 and up ski free, and Schweitzer does the same for seniors over 80.
  • Fifth and sixth graders can ski 17 Idaho resorts, Schweitzer among them, for $49 with the Ski Idaho Peak Passport.
  • Skiing several days? Lookout Pass sells a $179 three-ticket pack, and Mt. Spokane sells five-ticket packs for $249 (with some blackout dates) or $329 (any day), online through December 5.

Driving to the mountains in winter

  • Check road conditions before you leave: Idaho's 511 site for I-90 and the Idaho roads, and WSDOT for the Washington mountains.
  • The drive east to Silver Mountain and Lookout Pass follows I-90 over Fourth of July Pass, and Lookout sits at the top of its own pass, so expect snow on the road on storm days.
  • Drive a vehicle with good winter tires, ideally all-wheel drive, and carry chains.
  • Leave early on weekends and powder days. Lots fill, and Mt. Spokane warns that parking is limited on peak weekends.
  • Pack water, snacks, and a warm layer in the car in case of delays.

Rest days and non-skiers

  • Go tubing or ride the gondola at Silver Mountain, or book a day at the Silver Rapids indoor waterpark.
  • Skate downtown at CDA On Ice in McEuen Park, open through January 18, 2027.

  • Vantage Point Brewing Company (Breweries, Coeur d'Alene): A large food menu and lots of beer.
  • Daft Badger Brewing (Breweries, Coeur d'Alene): A downtown brewery where the kitchen is as good as the beer, which is not always the case. Big patio, and an easy walk down from Sherman Avenue.
  • Jeremiah Johnson Brewing Company CDA Pub (Breweries, Coeur d'Alene): A no-nonsense craft brewery and pub with solid food to go alongside it. Local beer, local crowd, and none of the fuss some taprooms insist on.
